Horse Riding
Riding for the disabled is now a worldwide concern and in Britain alone
there are several hundred groups together with organisations in America,
Europe and Australia. Successful and growing groups in South East Asia
comprise of the Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Thailand,
Indonesia and of course Malaysia.
For the physically handicapped, personal mobility is generally descendent
upon assistance either personal or mechanical. To learn control and
be independent on the safe, solid back of horse or pony, that has four
strong legs and provide a pattern of rhythmic movement, is less than
a 'magical' experience for the children and adults with disability.
Riding improves balance and co-ordination for any child or person with
disability. The movement of the horse is often a totally new sensation.
The experience improves concentration, particularly for the mentally
handicapped and encourages relaxation.
Most importantly, riding brings to them a new feeling of being able
to participate on equal terms with the able-bodies. To sit on a horse
and look down on someone is an exhilarating experience for a person
who is confined to a wheelchair. The riding for the disabled is held
every Wednesdays at .30pm at the Perak Turf Club Equestrian Training
Centre, Jalan Golf, Perak Darul Ridzuan.
